So much to do and such a short attention span...

Fri May 29, 2009, 5:11 PM
So Nathan has obviously been the favorite of visitors to my Visual Index folder. And he's mine, too. Even though Raechel is the main character of my book Nathan is still my favorite because he is, after all, deliciously attractive and I like boys.
Even fictitious boys that I created myself. ...lame. DX

Anyways, back to the point of this.
Recently I've been suffering from my second round of writers block (it's possible that the first never fully went away) which means I've had to turn to other creative outlets to entertain myself.
The night after graduation I was laying on the couch (because my grandmother got first dibs on my bed D:< ) and a brilliant idea surfaced. Why not give myself the ultimate challenge: attempt to sculpt Nathan out of clay? I'm sure you're unamused, but I on the other hand found this to be a great idea.
This past year I've made 16 3-D projects, almost all of which I was rushed to finish and I did not particularly like the designs of. I can point out severe design and quality flaws in almost all of my 3-D works, and I hate the fact that they look so amateurish. Puke.
So the thought of getting to sculpt my all-time favorite original character at my own pace and put every crease, wrinkle, and line into it with plenty of time to spare in case something goes wrong makes me EXTREMELY excited.

Now to the best part. While I thought about all of the work that would have to go into the design and construction of the sculpture, I realized that I only had one real drawing of Nathan and it doesn't even have legs! Thus a new drawing must be made detailing Nathan from head to foot. And, since it's a 3-D sculpture, I really need to make more than one drawing so I can see multiple angles and have something to refer to rather than just blindly sculpting...and thus I decided to make a glorious REFERENCE SHEET!
Yayayayay I'm so excited! And the progress is painfully slow, so I'm writing a journal entry in hopes that by putting it into words I will feel obligated to speed up or at least stick with all of my commitments. This is possibly the funnest most meaningless thing I've ever done.

Here's a checklist of everything to look forward to:

[X] Nathan's Full Body Drawing
[/] Nathan's Headshot Expressions x2 (maybe more)
[X] Nathan's Original Sketch
[/] Nathan and His Gift
[ ] Nathan's Brands and Scars (nekked time!...with boxers for the kiddies)
[ ] Nathan's Collar Close Up
[X] Nathan's Switchblades
[ ] Nathan's Badass Guns
[X] Nathan and Syke in the Future

I feel like I should explain the future one. I decided to draw Nathan and Syke as they'll look one year from now...which only makes sense if you know the plot...which only one person aside from me does. So I do apologize to anyone else who reads this.
Basically, from the beginning of the book to the climax a year's time passes, and most of the pictures I draw of Nathan are before the climax. Let me put it a different way. Raechel and Nathan are together for a good chunk of time, and then an event occurs that causes Nathan to go away for about three months (I think that's the amount of time I'm going to set it for), and when he comes back he looks a little different (scruffy face and a little angsty, d'aaaaaaw). There. I think that's good.

And in regards to his weaponry: the switchblades are 2 standard and 1 Italian stiletto cause I've always wanted one. They're gorgeous. And I recently learned that it's illegal to buy/own them in my state. SUCK FEST.
And I'm quite proud of his guns which I'm sure will only be mentioned once or twice throughout the entire book (maybe I'll work them in more after all I've gone through). Since I'm a gun-tard and up until yesterday did not know a single thing about guns, I had to spend the equivalent of 2 full days researching guns in order to find the top of the line for fighting and rapid firing and trustworthy and whatnot. I can't tell you how many times I had to go to wikianswers.com and type in "What does 'double action' mean?" and "What does 'semi-automatic' mean?". I was THAT uneducated. I had to read through countless gun-porn forums and gaming forums and even some army forums. At first I chose the Desert Eagle, and I had it drawn and was ready to scan it in when I came across a site saying that it was the most over-used gun in Hollywood and it was heavy, impractical, never used for fighting, and jammed constantly. This was at the beginning of my quest for guns so I thought a 4lb gun was LIGHT. I sadly chucked the Desert Eagle (I hated the name anyways. I hate cliche sounding names like "Dark Forest Hunter" and "Phantom Rose" or anything that sounds like it's out of a cheesy role play. Desert Eagle falls under that category). So, after learning that I had made the wrong decision, I had to spend the rest of my day looking for a new alternative. I came across a gun collector's archive with some gorgeous customized guns, and I saved them as some possibilities. A few minutes later on a different page I read that two of the three guns I had saved were of top quality, and I finally started to pick and choose which guns to stick with which character.
So, after much deliberation, research, and reresearch I have chosen the Beretta 92FS and the Sig P226 for Nathan. His are going to be customized, as well, so if you type the names into Google don't judge the guns that you see. Nathan's are cooler.
It's possible that I might add/swap the Sig for a Browning Hi-Power or a 1911 because I've read nothing but good things about both, but I was trying to reserve the Hi-Power for Syke. Then again Nathan is the one who fights the most out of the two. Who knows. I'm not a gun person, I'm just trying to research enough that when I write I give the appearance that I know what I'm talking about. XD

Wow, that was a long explanation...moving on...as you can see by the little check list I'm not even close to being done. I'm most likely going to not only post Syke and Nathan's picture in the reference sheet but also as a picture itself, but I've been told that it's possible I might be getting a tablet in a few months and I'd love to wait until then if possible to color all of this stuff. I reeeeeeally want to properly digitally color stuff with DEPTH, but that means waiting until possibly August before I can post any of this. Or, I post it in B&W and then put up the finished colored version later...ah. I'm full of dumb.

And this is long enough. And I hope that I've given you something to look forward to, because I'm certainly looking forward to it.
